bill browns super rare brownstone release is one for the deep heads, less well known than label mate everyday people but just as rare and collectable. shuffling sunshine soul its all about the groove and feeling. 500 copies only. one for the heads. bill brown and al hall jr met around 1971, they were both in south central l.a and shared the same apartment building, also in the same building was doug carn and brownstone singer billy wilson. these studio sessions were done at paramount studios hollywood where al hall jr was working for producer art smith a&c music. the main distributor for a&c was accent records.

cordial recordings in partnership with miami legend willie clarke are proud to release this unreleased version of ‘stand up for what you want’ by kat roberts. the song had previously been released on 12&#8243,,, with kat doubling up with les brown, who provided a motivational speech throughout the song. the version we’re releasing on the a side is the luscious solo vocal version by kat which had sat on tape since it’s recording in 84. on the flip we’ve used a small extract of les original vocal before kat lets rip.

the 70s saw a growing interest in so called dub versions, an approach based on deforming, stripping and rebuilding the original tune and came known as dub music. king tubby along with other dub wizards such as, lee perry & prince jammy, were responsible for this exciting new dimension to jamaican music. however, most of these dub albums were pressed in very small quantities and disappeared quickly. one of those albums is dub expression by errol brown and the revolutionaries. no gimmicks on this one, he uses simple echo and delay, a few vocals sliding in and out, separate instruments floating on top, with respect to the melody of the tunes. a mixture of dub and instrumentals. enjoy these super tracks!

setting out to make some happy music, sophie lloyd produced calling out in a dreary january as an antidote to the pervading doom and gloom of the news, summoning the power of the most joy-filled sound of all, gospel. this no-holds-barred anthem radiates all the live atmosphere of gospel worship in mid flow, with full instrumentation, keyboard breaks and understated kick drum pulling it all together. bringing in the uplifting voices of soul trio dames brown to re-record some old gospel samples was the icing on the cake, adding the last element of authenticity. a new member of the classic family, sophie lloyds impeccable knowledge of disco, soul and house shines through in this sparkling record, available on 7inch for the very first time.

paul white received universal acclaim for producing the majority of danny browns genre-defying atrocity exhibition album. in 2016 he also released a collaborative record with open mike eagle, and began work on a slew of solo material to be released on r&s records. with a free beat tape ‘everything youve forgotten’ released in january he now returns with danny brown on two tracks that showcase a producer at the very top of his game and one of the most exciting mcs of his generation. accelerator is a fuzzed-out psych monster that defies conventions about what rap music should sound like in 2017, while lions den proves that paul white and danny brown can beat the traditionalists at their own game too. instrumentals are included for both, as well as hand-drawn artwork by paul white himself.

as proprietors of the will & ink label, yaleesa hall & malin genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions. the duo appeared on hypercolours 10 years compilation in 2016 with the excellent buchan trap, and weve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair. the mechanical funk of artin swings with plenty of assured groove, the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut. dario & marco zenker, aka the zenker brothers, take time out from their busy ilian tape operations to remix artin into a brutal yet funky techno goliath. congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the zenkers finest remixes to date. the essence of funk continues in hall & malins music, with cahen, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant. wrapping up the release is brown, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the purpose maker sounds of a certain jeff mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through. modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, yaleesa hall & malin deliver the goods aplomb on this hypercolour single.
